often based on the playing of one influential musician or group of players from a given area, whose approach came to be seen as representative. In many cases, what we call a regional style is best understood as a cluster of local and individual styles that happen to share certain musical features. The regional styles discussed in this article represent some of the major and most widely recognised traditions within Irish traditional music.

The Humours of Lissadell / Sweeney's Dream

The Bunch of Keys

The Top Of Maol / The Humours Of Ballydesmond

An Salamanca/The Flood On The Holm

{"type":"audio","tracklist":true,"tracknumbers":true,"images":true,"artists":true,"tracks":[{"src":"https://www.tradschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/02.-Kevin-Burke-The-Humours-of-Lissadell-Sweeneys-Dream_sample.mp3","type":"audio/mpeg","title":"The Humours of Lissadell / Sweeney's Dream","caption":"","description":""The Humours of Lissadell / Sweeney's Dream" from Sweeney's Dream: Fiddle Tunes from County Sligo, Ireland by Kevin Burke. It’s also important to understand that regional styles are not rigid or neatly confined to county borders. Musical traditions do not stop at the edge of a map—there’s no point at which Sligo style suddenly gives way to something entirely different just because one has crossed into Roscommon. These styles are better thought of as overlapping zones of influence rather than strictly bounded territories. Local variation, personal interpretation, and shared repertoire across neighbouring areas all contribute to a more fluid, fuzzy picture of how style is passed on and evolves. As with any overview, this article is a synthesis. Much more could be said about each region, each musician, and each tune. The aim here is to offer a broad outline.

Related resource

An Introduction to irish Traditional Music

A detailed introduction to irish Traditional Music – the tunes, stylistic elements and history that make up this music.

  Learn more

The Sligo Style

The Sligo style is known for its fiddle and flute playing. Sligo fiddlers often use long, fluid bowing with frequent slurs, which contributes to a flowing, swinging rhythm. Notably, there is an accent on the back-beat of reels, creating a syncopated swing feel. Ornamentation like rolls and bowed triplets is abundant. The Sligo style incorporates both fiddle and flute traditions, so players of both instruments share the region’s emphasis on smooth phrasing and lively ornamentation. Flute players in the North Connacht/Sligo tradition, for example, use ornamentation and breath pulses to replicate the rhythmic lift of the fiddle music.

Fiddling

Sligo’s fiddling style rose to prominence through early 20th-century recording artists. Michael Coleman (1891–1945) is perhaps the most influential Sligo fiddler – his 1920s New York recordings set new standards and spread Sligo style globally. Along with Coleman, fellow emigrant fiddlers James Morrison and Paddy Killoran recorded prolific 78rpm discs, showcasing Sligo’s ornate rolls and infectious rhythm. Their legacy inspired generations of players; mid-century musicians like Fred Finn and Lad O’Beirne continued the tradition. On flute, Matt Molloy of The Chieftains (from Roscommon, bordering Sligo) is a master of the flowing North Connacht flute style. Contemporary champions include Kevin Burke, a Sligo-style fiddler known for his highly ornamented yet elegant playing, and Brian Conway (an Irish-American fiddler) who continues the Sligo ornament-rich approach. Local Sligo groups such as Dervish also carry on the tradition today, blending the old style with new energy.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Dervish - Traditional Irish Music from LiveTrad.com" width="1020" height="574" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Yk-XkVJC8b4?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; In contrast to the fast, ornamented Sligo approach, the East Galway/East Clare style is flowing and more relaxed in tempo. Emphasis is placed on melody and feeling over ornament density – long notes and legato phrasing are common. Ornamentation is used more sparingly than in Sligo. This gives the music a plaintive, soulful quality. Fiddle and flute are the primary instruments in this regional style. East Clare fiddlers are noted for using long, fluid bow strokes with multiple notes slurred, creating a smooth, unhurried sound (often described as “soft” or melancholy). The flute playing of East Galway is similarly gentle and flowing – flutists favor a legato, breathing style with fewer tongued articulations, letting the tunes “sing.” Overall, this style has been described as having a “slow and flowing music” quality, exemplified by the playing of masters like Martin Hayes. It often conveys a wistful or “yearning” mood that listeners find deeply moving.

Paddy Carty & Paddy Fahy

In East Galway, Paddy Carty was a celebrated flute player who epitomized this relaxed, flowing style – he played a Radcliff-system flute that allowed him to explore lovely melodic variations. Carty, along with flute players like Mike Rafferty and Jack Coen, kept alive the old East Galway flute tradition of the Ballinakill area. The Ballinakill Céilí Band of the 1930s, which featured flutist Tom Whelan, is legendary – several popular tunes are even named after Tom Whelan, reflecting his influence in the region. In East Clare and neighboring Galway, fiddle styles intermingled: Paddy Fahy (1916–2019) from East Galway was an esteemed fiddler-composer whose tunes have a distinctive “draíocht” (magic) in their melody, encapsulating the sweet, haunting character of the region. East Clare produced renowned fiddlers like Paddy Canny and P. J. Hayes (founder of the Tulla Céilí Band). Their 1959 recording with flutist Peadar O’Loughlin is a classic that showcased East Clare/East Galway music. Martin Hayes, son of P. J., is East Clare’s most famous contemporary fiddler – his playing is noted for its slow pace, nuanced emotion, and the subtle build-up of intensity. Hayes often foregoes flashy ornamentation, instead drawing out a rich tone and dynamic variation on single notes (a hallmark of East Clare fiddle technique). Other current musicians in this vein include concertina player Mary MacNamara whose music has the East Clare style of “less is more” in ornamentation.

<iframe loading="lazy" The Sliabh Luachra style is strongly associated with polkas and slides, which are the signature tune types of the region. Polkas (in 2/4 time) and slides (a fast type of jig in 12/8 or 6/8) dominate local repertoire and are played with infectious bounce. The music is highly rhythmic and accented, often with a pulse on the off-beat in polkas (musicians accent the second beat of each bar to drive the dance). In terms of technique, Sliabh Luachra fiddlers and box (button accordion) players use a mixture of slurred notes and single-bow (or single-button) strikes, balancing smoothness with punch. Ornamentation is plentiful: one will hear turns, slides (bending a note), and bowed trebles, though typically these ornaments serve to intensify the rhythm rather than decorate melody for its own sake. A “variety of slurs and single-stroke bows” are employed – for example, a fiddler might slur several notes to give a legato feel in one phrase, then use short separate bows in the next to accentuate the beat. This creates a lilting, yet driving quality. Button accordionists in Sliabh Luachra are known for playing in a style that matches the fiddle phrasing closely, using cuts and bellows pulses to mimic the fiddle bowing. The overall sound is earthy, highly rhythmic, and well-suited to dancing – indeed, Sliabh Luachra music is often described as having a lifeforce of its own on the dance floor, with its steady beat and “lots of ornamentation” adding spice.

Fiddle & Accordion

Sliabh Luachra’s tradition was nurtured by a famous master teacher, Pádraig O’Keeffe (1887–1963), a schoolmaster and fiddler who taught dozens of local students and wrote down tunes in a unique notation. O’Keeffe’s pupils included fiddlers Julia Clifford and Denis Murphy, whose 1960s recordings (e.g. The Star Above the Garter) brought Sliabh Luachra music to a wider audience. Their playing exemplified the regional style – lively polkas and slides with infectious swing. Another key figure was Johnny O’Leary, a master accordionist of the region, who had an enormous repertoire of local tunes and a driving, rhythmic playing style (he famously played for dancers in the local pubs for decades). In more recent times, Jackie Daly, a button accordion virtuoso from Kanturk on the edge of Sliabh Luachra, became an ambassador of the style. His recordings, such as his album Music from Sliabh Luachra and with the band De Dannan, showcase classic local tunes with smooth accordion phrasing and rhythm. Fiddler Matt Cranitch, who studied the Sliabh Luachra style in depth, has also been a prominent performer and author on the region’s music – his playing of “Mick Duggan’s Polkas” is cited as an exemplar of the polka style with off-beat accents. Other notable names include Breandán Begley (from West Kerry, on the fringes of Sliabh Luachra, known for lively accordion and singing). Today, at local festivals like the Patrick O’Keeffe Festival in Castleisland, one can hear many young musicians keeping the Sliabh Luachra flame alive, playing the same punchy polkas taught by O’Keeffe’s generation.

The quintessential Sliabh Luachra tune set is a pair of polkas. These tunes are typically in binary form with simple, catchy melodies, made exciting by the unique rhythmic emphasis when played in this style. Dozens of local slides are also cherished; a popular one is the slide “Dennis Murphy’s Slide” known for its joyful swing in Murphy’s fiddle recording. Sliabh Luachra musicians certainly play reels and jigs too but polkas and slides are their hallmark. Another unique practice is the music for sets (social dances): tunes such as “The Sliabh Luachra Set” of slides are played in sequence to fuel the energetic set dancing in the region’s halls.

<div class="row large-columns-1 medium-columns- small-columns- row-small slider row-slider slider-nav-reveal slider-nav-push" data-flickity-options='{"imagesLoaded": true, "groupCells": "100%", "dragThreshold" It is typically fast in tempo with a clear, “aggressive” attack. Donegal fiddlers favour short, separate bow strokes (rather than long slurs), producing a crisp, staccato sound. Bowed triplet ornaments (sometimes called trebles) are used liberally in place of the long rolls common elsewhere. This yields a punchy, dotted rhythmic feel, often described as unswung (notes are more evenly spaced, without the lilting swing of Sligo). Double-stops and drones (bowing two strings together) are another hallmark – Donegal fiddlers frequently accompany the melody with open-string drones to mimic Highland bagpipe harmonics. The overall effect is a strong, driving sound with “urgency and power”. Notably, Donegal music has preserved rare tune types less common elsewhere in Ireland: the repertoire includes Scottish-influenced highlands (4/4 tunes related to strathspeys), flings, barndances, and mazurkas, alongside the jigs and reels. These tunes, combined with the brisk bowing style, underscore the Scots influence on Donegal tradition.

Fiddle Prominence

Donegal’s fiddle legacy is rich, led by figures who became almost legendary. John Doherty (1900–1980), a traveling tinsmith and fiddler, is often cited as the epitome of Donegal fiddle style – renowned for his lightning-fast fingerwork, precise bowing, and vast repertoire. Recordings of John (and his brother Mickey Doherty) showcase the explosive triplets and pipe-like drones characteristic of the region. Another influential fiddler was Neillí Boyle, known for vigorous bowing and the use of unusual tunings; he and Doherty both drew inspiration from the Scottish bagpipe tradition. In the later 20th century, players like Paddy Glackin and Tommy Peoples (both of whom performed with the Bothy Band) brought Donegal fiddling to wider audiences. Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, founder of the band Altan, is a prominent contemporary exponent – her playing (learned from her father Francie Ó Maonaigh and others) exemplifies Donegal’s fiery bowing and sparse ornamentation, and Altan’s recordings have popularized many Donegal tunes. Other modern figures include Altan’s fiddlers Ciarán Tourish and Paul O’Shaughnessy, and younger talents like Aidan O’Donnell (TG4 Young Musician of the Year 2010) who carry the torch for Donegal style today.

Donegal’s repertoire reflects its Scottish influence and unique dance tunes. Donegal also maintained the old mazurka dance; tunes like “Neil Gow’s Wife” (a well-known Donegal mazurka) are played in a lilting 3/4 with the region’s typical clarity Many Donegal reels have Scottish origins or unique local settings. Additionally, Donegal musicians often play reels in duet an octave apart – a distinctive practice known as “playing the octave”.

Related resource

The Irish Low Whistle

A comprehensive introduction & resource guide for the Low Whistle, with audio & video examples and links to further resources.

  Learn more

The Clare Style

County Clare is home to multiple sub-styles, but the West Clare style in particular is celebrated for its rich ornamentation and flowing rhythm. Clare music (especially in the west and north of the county) often features a moderate tempo – faster than the East Clare lyrical style, yet more relaxed than Donegal – which allows for both danceability and musical nuance. The fiddle and the Anglo concertina are core instruments in Clare’s tradition. Niall Keegan has a detailed study of the Clare style on the Clare Library website.

West Clare has produced some of Ireland’s most revered traditional musicians. Willie Clancy (1918–1973) from Miltown Malbay, a uilleann piper and whistle player, profoundly influenced the Clare style – his piping, full of rolls and regulators, mirrored the local fiddle ornamentation and has inspired an annual summer school in his honor. Among fiddlers, Junior Crehan (1908–1998) of West Clare was a seminal figure; he learned from an older generation (including the noted fiddler Patrick Kelly of Cree) and composed tunes now common in Clare sessions. Crehan’s contemporary Bobby Casey (1926–2000) from West Clare brought the local style to London’s Irish community – his playing featured the smooth bowing and tasteful ornament that define Clare fiddling. Another key fiddler was John Kelly (1912–1989) of Kilbaha, who was equally adept at fiddle and concertina; he preserved many West Clare versions of tunes and passed them to his children (musicians James and John Kelly). On the concertina, Elizabeth Crotty (1885–1960), affectionately known as Mrs. Crotty of Kilrush, was an influential musician whose name is synonymous with the West Clare concertina style – her settings of reels and jigs with generous rolls and grace notes set the standard for concertina players. In the later 20th century, Noel Hill (born 1958) emerged from West Clare (from Caherea) as a virtuoso concertina player, blending the Clare ornament-rich approach with incredible technical skill. His album with fiddler Tony Linnane in 1979 is a touchstone of Clare style, and his concertina tune settings (like “Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel”) are often cited.

Tin Whistle Tunes to Learn

5 Easy Reels for Tin Whistle

Here are 5 easy reels for tin whistle beginners or improvers. traditional music today exist in a complex landscape shaped by globalization, technological change, and shifting social dynamics. The widespread availability of recordings, digital platforms, and international festivals has exposed musicians to a vast range of influences, often diluting or modifying traditional regional characteristics. As musicians travel, study, and collaborate across boundaries, the distinctiveness of local styles can erode, making it increasingly difficult to define clear geographical borders for musical traditions. The individuality of performers also plays a major role—within any given region, stylistic variation between players may be greater than the variation between regions, challenging the idea of a single, cohesive local style. Mass media and the influence of commercially successful recordings tend to promote more uniform, widely appealing interpretations, contributing to the homogenization of the music. At the same time, economic and social changes have altered the contexts in which traditional music was passed down and played, with fewer local gatherings and more formalized teaching environments. Migration has further reshaped regional sounds, as musicians bring their local traditions into new communities, creating hybrid or fused styles. The pressures of commercialization and the need to attract broader audiences often encourage musicians to simplify or adapt their regional approach, while audience expectations—especially among newer or international listeners—can influence which aspects of tradition are emphasized or sidelined. All of this creates a tension between preservation and evolution: many musicians are deeply committed to maintaining traditional elements of their regional style, yet also feel the pull toward innovation and personal expression. As a result, regional styles today are more fluid, more contested, and more influenced by external forces than ever before, raising important questions about how tradition can survive, adapt, and stay meaningful in a rapidly changing world.

Going Further

Style in Irish traditional music

Micho Russell – Tin Whistle & Flute

Mrs Crotty – Concertina

Joe Cooley – accordion

Introduction The term “regional style” in Irish traditional music refers to the distinctive ways tunes are played in different parts of the country – often based on the playing of one influential musician or group of players from a given area, whose approach came to be seen as representative.
