The jig is the most common dance tune after the reel. It is quite fast and in 6/8 time.

Many jigs are of Irish origin, unlike reels which can often be Scottish. They date from the 18th-19th centuries.
The tunes are usually in 8-bar parts, with the simple structure AABB.
