Cathy Jordan Album Launch Tonight

Cathy Jordan @ TradschoolCathy Jordan, singer with the group Dervish, launches her solo CD “All the Way Home” tonight, Friday 27 January 2012 at 8pm in the Model, The Mall, Sligo. The concert will also be streamed live on, where listeners can also win one of 5 copies of the new CD.

Cathy joined the Sligo band Dervish in 1991 and went on to record seven albums, including her debut recording with the band Harmony Inn, and perform hundreds of concerts in over 4O cities throughout the world.

The 12 track album includes traditional and folk songs from Cathy’s childhood, songs she heard sung in the family home as a child – performing the songs was a fundamental part of family life, and they remain embedded in her musical psyche. She wishes to introduce these  ballads to a newer generation, imbibing them with a vibrant and contemporary energy while remaining respectful to her traditional roots.

New Tune a Day Blog

newtuneaday blog“New Tune a Day” is a blog by fiddler Katie Davis Henderson, of the group Killarney. She regularly posts videos of Irish traditional tunes, and also Scottish and Old-Time music – on average 4-5 tunes per week

Katie started playing fiddle at the age of 4 with the family group “Fiddlesticks”;  they released several CDs together. She now plays in the Irish trad duo Killarney, with octave mandolin player Colin Botts.They released an album, Pull the Knife, in March 2011.

Her blog is an interesting source of tunes, both standards and lesser-known. Below, she plays the reel “The Old Maid of Galway”.

Tradfest starts today

Tradschool - Temple Bar TradfestThe Temple Bar Tradfest takes place in Dublin from January 25-29th. This is the 7th year of the festival, and will include headline concerts in Christchurch, Dublin City Hall and the Button Factory.

There will be over 200 free events during the festival, with open sessions, two outdoor stages, classes and showcases, childrens’ events and much more.

Performers include Michael McGoldrick, Ralph McTell and the Dubliners 50th anniversary gig; also performing are Voices and Harps with Moya Brennan and Cormac De Barra, Frankie Gavin, Sean O Riada’s Cor Cúil Aodha, Tommy Sands, Mick O’ Brien, an evening of Irish Culture in Song and story with Noel O’ Grady and a very special gala benefit night for the Pecker Dunne.

The 6th edition of the Bono Winter School (Brittany, France) is taking place this February 23-26.

During the festival, the village will be transformed into a real Irish village:
-Music workshops during the day (badjo, bodhran, fiddle, uilleann pipe, piano, concertina, song, dance, etc…)
-More than 50 sessions during the festival
-Instrument makers exhibition

-Tutors’ concert Saturday night
