Where does Irish traditional music come from?

Some Irish music is native in origin, descending from ancient Clan marches.

However, a lot of music has been "borrowed" from neighbouring cultures and adapted to the Irish tradition: reels from Scotland, jigs from England and Europe, polkas from Poland...

This process continues today, with the incorporation of tunes from Cape Breton or other traditions.
