Irish whistle and low player Cormac Breathnach has released a new album entitled “Ealu” (meaning”escape” or “evasion”) on the label Dioscai Mandala. The album, his first in 13 years, features music on low whistle from Cormac, with 20 different contributors from various contributors. Cormac’s previous releases include “A Musical Journey”, and two albums with the groundbreaking group Deiseal. In a recent interview, Breathnach was cited as an influence by flute and whistle player Michael McGoldrick.
The album contains 10 new instrumental compositions of Cormac’s, most of which are contained in the title track, Éalú, which runs to 9.5 minutes, along with our new compositions by other musicians – two by Alan Griffin, one by Roger Doyle and the last by an unknown Spanish composer. The album also features two songs and five works from the Irish tradition. In conttrast to previous recordings, Cormac plays uniquely low whistles (namely Susato low whistles in the keys of C, D, Eb, F and G) rather than low & soprano whistles.
Singing on the new album is Aoife Doyle, Kokia, Uché G. Akujobi and U.S. actress/singer Vanessa Williams (Desperate Houswives).
Also participating are musicians, Gavin Ralston, Aongus Ralston, Aoife Doyle, Roger Doyle, Fiachra Trench, Steve Cooney, Niwel Tsumbu, Brian Dunning, Paul McAteer, Robbie Harris, Seán Whelan, Eamon Murray, Seamus Brett, Michael Considine, Jaimé Muñoz, Carlos Beceiro, Jorge Arribas, and Diego Galaz.
